English, August is irreverent, frank in both language and ideas, and very, very funny. Of course, I wasn’t born in the 50s and couldn’t relate with some parts of the book but I was more than happy to learn things about the olden days. Chatterjees writing is most notable, however, for its humour. His actions proved it all, so, I think the author didn’t need to emphasize it over and again.
For example repeatedly, telling the reader that Abra was loved by Pastor Ezekiel and then going further to describe it. Not every reader would be patient over such. I felt the narratives/description in some parts of the book were unnecessary and somewhat boring. August himself has just landed a prize government job. The end did take me by surprise, as I didn’t expect Abra to ever find her birth mother. Agastya Sen, known to friends by the English name August, is a child of the Indian elite. The book does contain a few sexual scenes which were ambiguously described by the author. He portrays everything a man should be – an honest, hardworking and patient man. The character development of the story is generally commendable, with Joshua, Pastor Ezekiel’s son being my favorite character. The book is set in the 1950s, narrating what it was like in the 50s, with Abra obviously the main character of the story.
